In 1977, the City of Milwaukee took a substantial creative risk by commissioning famed pop artist Robert Indiana to paint the basketball floor at the MECCA Arena. Amid skepticism and controversy, the world of sport and art converged making the MECCA Floor the World's Largest Pop Art Painting.

Fast forward to 2013, the fully-painted 40,000lb. portable MECCA Floor was temporarily converted into an interactive and modular sculpture exhibit utilizing forty-five (45) of the two hundred and forty (240) 4’ x 8’ panels…

and placing it right outside of the Mayor’s office.

The MECCA Sculpture creates a multi-sensory experience through form, function and human interaction by provoking the observer to ask ?WHY! public art is so vital in defining the cultural identity of a city and the important role it plays in inspiring the individual citizen.
